The first SAAN-lecture in South Australia was given by Prof Harm-Anton Klok from EPF Lausanne, who gave a lecture about polymer brushes at the Ian Wark Research Institute in Adelaide. In fact, the Wark has very strong ties with Switzerland and runs numerous reseach projects together with ETH Zurich, EPFL and the University of Geneva. Staff exchange also occurs frequently and the Institute's Director Prof John Ralston has been doing research with and in Switzerland for a number of years. The Institute's Deputy Director, Prof Hans Griesser is the SAAN Coordinator for South Australia. The Wark is also the only Australian institution to be involved in a Swiss National Science Sinergia grant. The Sinergia involves several Swiss applicant institutions and can involve a foreign institution if it augments the value of the research network.
